Buyer profile What is their business?
Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) is a fully owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical, and acts as their European Research and Development arm. Sumitomo Chemical is a major chemical company with headquarters in Japan. It operates businesses in five sectors – Petrochemicals & Plastics, Energy & Functional Materials, IT-related Chemicals, Health & Crop Sciences, and Pharmaceuticals. It has 77 overseas facilities which enable global markets reach.
As well as working on our own research projects (which span from wave guide materials to water scarcity; from smart sensors to squeezed cities), in 2020 a new Corporate Venturing and Innovation activity was started within CDT, actively looking for new technologies and start-up companies that will help solve the challenges of society through the creation of innovation and new value, in synergy with SCC business. Given the strong links with the parent company, CDT benefits from the financial strength and channels to market of SCC.
While we are interested in many areas of new technology, our innovation interest focuses on four priority areas: 1) Healthcare, 2) Environment and Energy, 3) Food, 4) Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
The Energy & Functional Materials Sector provides a wide variety of functional chemical products that contribute to reducing the environmental impact and conserving energy and natural resources, including inorganic materials such as alumina used in energy- saving products, high-performance polymer additives, super engineering plastics and lithium- ion secondary battery materials (e.g. battery separators) used in electronic components and next-generation vehicles.
